A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Noblesse is based on a South Korean manhwa (cartoon) series that features lots of fantasy violence and teen-oriented innuendo. One cast member is sadistic, and is often shown brutalizing captives (bloody wounds are visible), and knives, guns, and other weapons are used. There's some swearing. The overall series may be hard to follow if viewers don't watch the prequel, which was produced as a web cartoon.

What's the Story?
Adapted from a South Korean manhwa, NOBLESSE is about how a powerful noble protects his kind while living life as a high school student in Japan. After sleeping in a coffin for over eight centuries, Protector of the Nobles Cadis Etrama Di Raizei, aka Rai, is enrolled in Ye Ran High School, which is presided over by his loyal servant and brilliant scientist Frankenstein. They both keep their real identities a secret as Rai tries to get up to speed with the modern world and make friends with fellow students. Also joining them is M-21, a former Union experiment who works as the school's special security guard in exchange for living in Frankenstein's house. But a Union special forces team known as the DA-5 is headed toward Japan for its next mission, and an appearance of more nobles also adds to the fray.
Is It Any Good?
The dark fantasy series offers an engaging plot line as Rai and his team keep the people around them safe while hiding in plain sight. It's entertaining, but Noblesse is easier to understand if viewers first watch the series' original net animation (ONA) prequel, Noblesse: Awakening (also referred to as Episode 0), which contextualizes everything that happens in the TV show. If you can get past this and follow the narrative, Noblesse offers lots of solid entertainment.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about TV series based on Japanese manga and South Korean manhwa (types of comic books/graphic novels). In what ways do they specifically differ? How are they similar? Do you prefer one over the other?
Are the characters in Noblesse based on anything or anyone? Why is Frankenstein so loyal to Rai? Does Rai acknowledge this loyalty, or does he take it for granted?
