What's the Story?
Created by filmmaker Gregg Araki, NOW APOCALYPSE is a comedy series about a group of four 20-something friends trying to find fame, fortune, and love in Los Angeles during pre-apocalyptic times. Ulysses Zane (Avan Jogia) is a frustrated actor who is trying to find love while trying to figure out his life. He's also having weird nightmares that have him a little bit worried. Luckily, he's got good friends -- like fellow wannabe actress Carly (Kelli Berglund) and his rich roommate and aspiring screenwriter Ford Halstead (Beau Mirchoff) -- to help him work through his anxieties. But when he meets Gabriel (Tyler Posey), he gets the sense that the universe is taking a strange turn. Halstead's girlfriend, Severine Bordeaux (Roxane Mesquida), an astrobiological theorist, seems to be thinking the same thing.
Is It Any Good?
This adult-oriented comedy series mixes romance, humor, and science fiction to create a show that balances the silly and the surreal. The characters, most of whom are too immature or clueless to recognize that their Hollywood dreams will never be fulfilled, spend their time writing, eating, and hooking up with the help of social media apps. When the show's dreamlike and creepy "end of the world" story comes out of nowhere, it's quickly and smoothly woven into their lives.
It's hard to define what Now Apocalypse is really about, which makes watching it feel like you've tuned in to some sort of televised theater of the absurd. Some will find it tiresome, but viewers who like mature, sex-positive coming-of-age humor will find it worth checking out.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about sexuality on TV. When do you think it's OK (if ever) to show innuendo, promiscuity, nudity, or explicit scenes on a show? Is any of this appropriate for kids?
Now Apocalypse features lots of cursing, smoking, and other adult behaviors. Does this make the show funnier? Stranger? Can it accomplish the same things without this content?
