Oshi no Ko
What's the Story?
OSHI NO KO follows teen twins Aqua (voiced by Jack Stansbury) and Ruby Hoshino (voiced by Alyssa Marek) as they seek the truth about their mother, former idol and pop culture star Ai Hoshino (voiced by Donna Bella Litton), and grapple with memories of their previous lives as a murdered doctor and his terminally ill patient.
Is It Any Good?
This captivating drama reveals difficult truths about the entertainment industry. Oshi no Ko has characters with compelling, complicated back stories that illuminate the shades of gray in fame and fandom. Although characters suffer great hardships and could be pitied, they also make choices that reveal their own messy faults. This duality means the themes are honest looks at the human experience and not vague, moralizing lessons.
The show does get dark at times, but does a pretty good job balancing it with humor and sincerity. It doesn't always handle difficult topics (like cyberbullying, suicide, terminal illness) with as much sensitivity or nuanced representation as it could. But to the show's credit, it doesn't take these topics lightly either.
