What's the Story?
PLAYGROUND follows the drama at the renown Playground dance studio in Los Angeles, California. The Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin and choreography Kenny Wormald co-own the studio, which hosts top hip-hip choreographers and teachers who work with celebrities, and where dancers from all over take classes and try to take center stage in hopes of being discovered. The competition between them is always fierce, especially when music artists like music artist Megan Thee Stallion and Tinashe, who go the studio looking for fresh choreography and new talent. When they're not dancing, stars spend lots of time gossiping about each other and dealing with lots of relationship drama.
Is It Any Good?
This edgy reality series features young dancers who go all out to showcase their talent while outshining others when they can. Playground highlights the amount of hard work and commitment it takes to be a career dancer, and how competitive the dance industry is. it also features lots of argumentative behavior between students, teachers, choreographers, and even the studio co-owners. Some of these moments feel a little staged for the cameras, but they also appear to reflect some the truth behind what the business is like. Nonetheless, the endless conflicts makes it hard to focus on their first-rate performances. Overall, Playground is more drama than dance, but will satisfy those looking for some dance-based entertainment.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the things you have to do in order to have a professional dance career. Given that dance is very physical and can cause injuries, how long of a career do dancers usually have?
Does Playground offer a legitimate representation of what working in the dance industry is like? Or do they play up the drama for the cameras?
