What's the Story?
POMPEII: OUT OF TIME WITH TOM HIDDLESTON features actor and self-proclaimed amateur classicist Tom Hiddleston as he explores what happened during the last 24 hours of the Roman city of Pompeii. It combines dramatic reenactments of the true stories about three survivors of the original eruption, teen bronzesmith apprentice Avianius, wealthy bathhouse owner Julia Felix, and an unnamed Praetorian guard to paint a visual picture of what transpired after Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. Throughout these narratives, analyses from experts like archeologist Caite Barrett, historian Steven Tuck, and psychologist Sarita Robinson help deconstruct theories about what and why things happened. Throughout it all, it examines the fateful decisions they, and others, made that determined whether they lived or died.
Is It Any Good?
The three-part cinematic docudrama mixes stagy reenactments with interesting information to understand what happened to Pompeii and the neighboring city of Herculaneum after Mount Vesuvius erupted. By contextualizing this within the true stories of people who survived the original eruption, Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston offers a unique point of view that reveals some of the dynamics between the people living in this Roman society while offering details about the way they responded to the crisis. Some of what's uncovered also challenges a few preconceived notions about Pompeii society and people's actions during and after the city's final hours. It's informative, but Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston is also highly stylized, and some of Hiddleston's expressions of empathy are a bit too melodramatic. Nonetheless, there's something to be learned from it, even if it's delivered with theatrical flair.
