What's the Story?

In REGULAR SHOW: THE LOST TAPES, blue jay Mordecai (J.G. Quintel) and raccoon Rigby (William Salyers) return for more surreal slacker hijinx. This animated series takes place in the same timeline as the original Regular Show, but through a pseudo-time traveling conceit. Pops (Sam Marin), a lollipop man who owns the park where Mordecai and Rigby are groundskeepers, is shown in the afterlife. He finds a treasure trove of "memory tapes," VHS tapes that he plays to reminisce about the Regular Show, and each episode is a "memory." Storylines are as absurd as in the original series. In one episode, Rigby and Mordecai build a hovercraft to dispose of park trash, and then are mistaken for aliens and shot down by U.S. military planes. Regular Show series regulars like Skips (Mark Hamill) and Eileen (Minty Lewis) reprise their roles.

Regular Show, which originally aired from 2010 to 2017, captured the hearts of many irreverent teenagers with its boundary-pushing humor and purposefully bad role model leads. The Lost Tapes covers familiar territory, albeit with more of a focus on secondary characters than the original. The absurd and at times immature humor will appeal to some of today's teens, though many of the jokes seem more aimed at the original viewers with 1980s and '90s cultural references. Fans of the original series will enjoy this reboot, but adults may not appreciate its brand of humor.
