Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker Tapes
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
RICHARD RAMIREZ: THE NIGHT STALKER TAPES is a documentary series featuring never before released audio recorded prison interviews with the late convicted serial killer Richard Ramírez. In the 1990s author Philip Carlo audio recorded over 100 hours of exclusive death row interviews with Ramírez for his book, The Night Stalker: The Disturbing Life and Chilling Crimes of Richard Ramirez. The death row inmate shares details about his childhood, including sustaining head injuries, being raised by troubled family members and friends, and his drug addiction, along with his thoughts about the crimes he committed. Conversations with his family members like niece Rosie Juarez also shed light on what he was like before he set out on his killing spree, while law enforcement officials, journalists, and victims' loved ones discuss the heinousness of his crimes. Meanwhile, forensic psychiatrists Gary Brucato and Joni Johnson highlight how various factors help explain (but not excuse) some of Ramírez's terrible acts, and why media coverage of his arrest led to his fan base, which included groupies like death rock musician Eva O, singer and former practicing Satanist Nikolas Schreck, and former magazine editor Doreen Lioy, who married him in 1996. Archival crime scene and news footage rounds out the narrative.
Is It Any Good?
This dark and somewhat sensational true crime docuseries offers a few new details and rehashes some old ones about Richard Ramírez's life and crimes. Released 20 years after his killing spree began, the audio recordings give viewers some insight into how Ramirez's mind worked, his fascination with death, and his lack of remorse for the crimes he committed. Meanwhile, the conversations with the victims' families, especially when they talk about the long-term impact the violent deaths of their loved ones continue to have on them. Only slightly more disturbing are the conversations with the serial killer's fans, some of whom consider themselves friends of the late serial killer, even after learning more about the horrific nature of his criminal acts. True crime fans may find it entertaining to revisit this story, but many will question the ethics behind media continuing to give him the limelight.
