What's the Story?

ROLLER JAM is a competition show in which ten American roller-skating teams compete in New Orleans, LA, for a chance to win $150,000. Each episode features a different era of music. Jordin Sparks hosts, professional figure skater, Johny Weir, and roller-skate icon, Terrell Ferguson plus another guest judge score technique (50 points) and creativity (50 possible points) before teams go to final rounds of competition.

Is It Any Good?

This is a fun, high-energy competition show that highlights individual and team talent without the argumentative behavior and inter-team drama of some competition shows. Generally, you feel a connection with the backstory of the Roller Jam teams, and really want them all to do well. The judging and language is positive and the performances are exciting to nail-biting, but not in a frightening way. And, regardless of the music you grew up with, the songs that the teams perform to are all mega-hits that seem fun to skate to.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about which roller-skate teams they like the most and why. Teams come from a variety of locations within the US, wear matching team costumes, and perform roller-based tricks, techniques and choreography moves that vary as much as their backgrounds. From Venice Beach all-girl crews to deep-south blue-collar guy-groups, who do you and your family think have that "it" quality?

  • Is there a specific era of music or individual song you would want to perform to? Why? And what would your costume look like while performing to that song?

  • Do you think the judges are fair and knowledgable? Is there a judge you like more than others? If so, what it is about them?
