What's the Story?

RONALDINHO: THE ONE AND ONLY is a Brazilian docuseries that chronicles the life and career of Brazilian football (soccer) star Ronaldinho Gaúcho. Ronaldo de Assis Moreira was born and raised in Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, and watched his older brother Roberto, aka "Assis," play professional football for South Brazil's Gremios and FC Sion in Switzerland. But Assis was also Ronaldinho's father figure and football mentor from the time he was seven years old, and managed his football his career with the help of their sister Deisi. By the age of 17 Ronaldinho was signed by Gremios to play professionally, and went on to play for clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, and a series of others throughout Brazil and Mexico until his retirement in 2017. Known for being a charismatic, technically gifted, and creative footballer, he earned the nickname "O Bruxo" (The Magician) for pulling out his signature moves and scoring goals when matches weren't going their way. But Ronaldinho was also a controversial figure in the football universe due to his reputation for partying extensively, including on nights before matches, and other post-retirement events that call Assis' business practices into question. Interviews with Ronaldinho and Assis, along with journalists, football players, and coaches, explore the retired footballer's life and career, while archival footage documents his journey on and off the pitch and reveal how he became one of the most decorated footballers in history.

The engaging docuseries gives Ronaldinho and his brother Assis the opportunity to talk about the younger retired player's extraordinary football career from their points of view. While much of the Ronaldinho: The One and Only production revolves around his talent, important game moments, and his love for having a good time, this narrative also reveals the close relationship Ronaldinho has with his brother, his sister Deisi, and his late mother, who passed away from COVID-19 in February 2021. He also talks extensively about his love for his son, professional footballer João Mendes, and his regrets associated with being absentee father. These intimate stories help Ronaldinho: The One and Only paint a well-rounded portrait of a man who's extremely appreciative of the overall athletic career he's had and the people who helped him throughout without the need to prove himself anymore.
