What's the Story?
ROYAL RULES OF OHIO is an unscripted series about three 20-something sisters from two of Ghana's most prominent kingdoms living it up in the U.S. Midwest. Over two decades ago Akili "Bobo" Agyekum and his wife Delali left Ghana to pursue their studies in the United States. Now their adult daughters Thelma, Nana, and Brenda are trying to live life as independent adults while still being expected to adhere to the rules dictated by their royal roots, their culture, and their community. From trying to live up to their parents and their uncles and aunties' high expectations, to drinking and dating certain men without them finding out, the sisters are enjoying life, even if it means pushing the boundaries of what's expected of them from an older generation.
Is It Any Good?
The fun unscripted series highlights what it's like for three adult sisters to negotiate their role as descendants of Ghanaian royalty with their desire to live an unrestricted lifestyle in the U.S. Viewers get to watch their parents and extended family mentor (and reprimand) them with the expectation that they'll behave in ways that respect the royal and ethnic values of the country from which they come. Meanwhile, the sisters reveal how far they're willing to go to challenge those boundaries, including engaging in social behaviors that align with U.S. mainstream drinking and dating culture.
The series also offers some interesting insights into different Ghanaian norms and traditions, most of which center around family. As privileged and rebellious as the sisters appear to be, it's evident that they're intelligent and educated career-oriented women who love their family and their community, even if there are certain expectations that they prefer not to meet. Like most TV reality fare, there's lots of manufactured drama, but at its core, Royal Rules of Ohio reflects some common tensions within families that emigrate from their countries to the U.S. Older generations struggle to maintain the cultural values from where they originally come from, and younger generations try to live their lives according to the norms of the place they now call home.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what it's like for a family to move to the United States from a different country. What are the challenges that arise when the norms and traditions of their country of origin are very different from those in the United States?
What code of conduct do the sisters from Royal Rules of Ohio have to follow because of their royal lineage? Is the way they go about undermining those rules appropriate, even if they're adults?
