On SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: UK, a group of British comedians perform a variety show of sketches live on Saturday nights, with a series of one-off hosts including Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, and Riz Ahmed, as well as musical guests.
Is It Any Good?
There's something sacred about the reputation of the long-running and iconic Saturday Night Live. It's a show that's held such a prominent space in U.S. comedy that franchising it out to a new country, in Saturday Night Live: UK, feels like an inherent risk. But the format is strong and this new version maintains it, opening confidently with guests and hosts that will pull in early audiences whether they're familiar with the original or not. And let's not forget the strong reputation the United Kingdom has when it comes to sketch comedy. This is far from a new format for the featured comedians, but it is a high-profile space for new talent and cutting-edge humor. As with the U.S. version, the sketches can be hit-and-miss, but it's a show that prides itself on challenging what's acceptable and encouraging performers to learn off the cuff. From politics to social media, beauty creams to beloved kids characters, nothing is off limits, and that's the beauty of what unfolds on-screen. It's in its early days compared to the original SNL with decades on its resume, but this U.K. version is proving that it has a lot to offer of its own.
