Parents' Guide to Skeleton Knight in Another World

Parents need to know that Skeleton Knight in Another World is an action anime that looks light-hearted on the surface but actually features potentially triggering topics. Arc (voiced by Brandon Johnson) has a laid-back attitude that makes things seem more casual than they are. In reality, he and his companions are saving people from slavery, violence, and sexual assault. In fact, the very first scene is a group of men attempting to rape two women. That said, any attempt at positive representation is shallow. There are some powerful, fully developed female characters—but they still need saving (or at least some help) from Arc. Villains who assault women face consequences (death, humiliation, loss of power). However, the show has multiple attempted rape scenes that feel gratuitous, and it even makes a couple jokes about sexual violence towards men. Fights with people and monsters are tense and sometimes gruesome, but bloody images are pretty mild in comparison. Strong language includes profanity ("hell," "crap," "ass," "s--t") and verbal threats of violence and sexual harm. Partial nudity ranges from a brief bath scene with sensitive areas censored to women in underwear during assault scenes. There's some casual smoking and drinking as characters rest and eat meals. The heroes always do the right thing and help people, but the overall themes aren't very deep.
