What's the Story?
SMOKE follows arson investigator Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton) and detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) as they team up to stop a wave of deadly fires terrorizing a Pacific Northwest city. When the pattern of destruction points to not one but two serial arsonists, the case spirals into a dangerous game of deception, obsession, and buried secrets. As the investigation heats up, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur—and no one is safe from the flames.
Is It Any Good?
This series is less about solving crimes than just watching something combust. The soul of Smoke is the fire itself: morbidly poetic and viscerally alive. While the series doesn't sentimentalize arson, it frames each blaze as a haunting echo of the characters' suppressed desperation. The practical fire effects are strikingly well-executed for a TV production, delivering enough visual impact to rattle viewers. Flames become a recurring mirror for the show's ensemble: arsonists, investigators, and those in between.
Egerton gives off an intangible, low-simmering menace that feels almost intentional in its transparency. Smollett, meanwhile, brings a charismatic steeliness that refreshingly avoids the "tough-on-the-outside-soft-on-the-inside" trope of heroines. This isn't a show that demands admiration for flashy twists or reinventions of genre. Instead, watch it for the gritty atmosphere where psychological rot smolders beneath procedural rhythms––and feel the slow burn of human unraveling.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Smoke uses fire not just as a plot device, but as a metaphor for emotional repression, systemic failure, or moral collapse. What does the show suggest about the psychological toll of working within flawed institutions?
In what ways do the characters' past traumas shape their present choices, and how does the series balance empathy with accountability for their actions?
How does the show challenge the idea of heroism in crime dramas by blurring the line between protector and perpetrator? Are you drawn to anti-heroes? Why do you think audiences like anti-heroes?
