What's the Story?

Spy/Master tells the story of Victor Godeanu, a Romanian dictator's right-hand man. When his boss's paranoid behavior pushes Godeanu too far, he visits the American embassy with an offer to defect. But can the Americans pull him out before he and his family are put in grave danger?

Is It Any Good?

Most good spy thrillers have a central mystery, usually a variation of who can or can't be trusted -- this one does not. Spy/Master plays more like a character study of its lead character, but without much actual insight into who he is. Most of the fun parts of an espionage story: guessing who's telling the truth, who's lying, who's listening in, who's hiding around the corner -- are filtered out. What's left is a spy thriller in name only, a run-of-the-mill drama with a few decent action sequences.

  • Do the different sides handle their problems differently in this series? How do the Americans handle political problems? The Romanians? Do you think this accurately reflects real life? Why or why not?
