What's the Story?
In this reboot of the iconic classic, STAR SEARCH is hosted by Anthony Anderson (Black-ish) and once again features a head-to-head competition format. Acts, ranging from young kids to elderly adults, compete head to head by category (dance, singing, comedy, etc.), and are scored by celebrity judges Chrissy Teigen (Lip Synce Battle), Jelly Roll, and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as well as a live global audience via Netflix's interactive voting system. Winners advance to the following week and losers go home until the ultimate winners are crowned.
Is It Any Good?
This reboot aims to blend nostalgia with modern interactivity but the result is a clunky and underwhelming viewing experience. The judges' chemistry on this version of Star Search is inconsistent, with Jelly Roll's warmth clashing with Sarah Michelle Gellar's sometimes forced delivery. Chrissy Teigen adds charisma, but the panel as a whole doesn't elevate the series. A few performers shine, but the talent often feels less polished than on rival shows, and the live production is a bit of a mess with limited audience energy and occasional visible crew members and timing errors that deflate the "worldwide spectacular" branding. The format will still be enjoyable for families, especially those who like to root for underdogs, but it lacks the polish or emotional weight of competitors like America's Got Talent orThe Voice.
