What's the Story?

STEAL is a British thriller about what happens when an employee gets caught in the middle of a massive heist during which billions of pounds are stolen from pensions and retirement funds. Zara Dunne (Sophie Turner) and her best friend Luke (Archie Madekwe) are trade processors at an investment firm. As mid-level employees the job isn't too exciting, but for the arrival of intern Myrtle Clark (Eloise Thomas). This suddenly changes when a gang of prosthetic-wearing people with guns, led by a man named London (Jonathan Slinger), show up and take over the floor. After herding everyone into conference rooms, London pulls Zara and Luke out to put through six trades amounting to four billion pounds, draining the pension funds of their clients. It's a frightening and violent ordeal, and triggers a complicated investigation by DCI Rhys Covac (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd) and financial crime investigator Darren Yoshida (Andrew Koji), who suspect that it was an inside job. But it's not until the day after the heist, when Zara discovers something strange in her account, that she realizes that she's been put in the middle of something bigger.

The suspenseful crime series offers a tightly spun narrative that offers lots of entertaining twists and turns. As Steal progresses things get more complicated, but this also makes it more interesting. Some of the characters' backstories and subtle behaviors add to the engaging drama. But like many series of this genre, Steal has its fair share of bloody violence that create some over-the-top moments. Nonetheless, fans of British thrillers will find this a solid, bingeable series.
