Stephen King's Rose Red
What's the Story?
Set in Seattle in 1991, STEPHEN KING'S ROSE RED centers on a group of psychics, a college professor (Nancy Travis of So I Married an Axe Murderer), and a young girl on the autism spectrum with telekinetic powers as they attempt to "wake up" a house known as Rose Red. The story jumps back and forth between that time period and when the house was first built, in 1905.
Is It Any Good?
A made-for-TV mini-series that, despite its low budget and hokey special effects, manages to deliver the compelling mystery viewers expect from Stephen King. Full of familiar faces before they gained real fame Stephen King's Rose Red is a nostalgic throwback that mega-fans of the author will appreciate. It's important to note, however, that the show contains some troubling elements, including undercurrents of sexism and the representation of people of color and differently-abled individuals in stereotypical and demeaning ways.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the only Black character in Stephen King's Red Rose being the servant of a rich White family. Ask your child what they think about stereotyped or demeaning representations and consider asking if they've seen other shows or films where they felt that the representations were better.
Remind your child that they can take a break if their emotional engagement feels too intense. Consider asking if any of the scary content they watch bothers them later, like at night.
Even teens can get frightened or upset. You can help by having honest discussion and reassurances as well as a hug and distraction.
