What's the Story?

SUPERHOT: THE SPICY WORLD OF PEPPER PEOPLE looks at the subculture of "chili heads," who dedicate themselves to growing and eating some of the hottest peppers in the world. The 10-part series, narrated by Ben Schwartz, explains what makes peppers spicy, and demonstrates how growers are attempting to make them hotter. It also introduces some of the community's more prominent personalities, including YouTube celeb Johnny Scoville, hot sauce maker Aurea DeGuzman, and Troy Primeaux, who grows the 7 Pot Primo, one of the world's hottest peppers. Cameras also follow as people compete in hot pepper-eating competitions, and how the champions make it to the end.

The docuseries offers a quirky inside look into the practices of a tight-knit community of hot pepper lovers. Superhot: The Spicy World of Pepper People showcases some of the hottest peppers being grown and consumed today based on the Scoville scale (used to measure pungency), and highlights some of the ways growers are attempting to develop unique and spicier varieties. It's also interesting to learn what inspires people to be part of this subculture, ranging from cultural legacy to fighting addiction. But much of Superhot: The Spicy World of Pepper People is about the fiery competition among chili heads, the heat of which seems to fuel big egos, big wins, and searingly painful losses. Though these stories could have been told in much fewer than 10 episodes, if you're looking for something interesting to binge, it's still tasteful enough.
