What's the Story?

In SURFSIDE GIRLS, Sam and Jade are surfing one afternoon. Sam gets pulled into a current, disappearing into an underground cavern for a moment, and stumbles on a strange gold coin. She hears a voice that calls for help, jumps into the surf again and rejoins her friend. But this coin isn't one of the fake coins sold in the local museum gift shop. It's made of "Au," as her friend Jade points out -- the periodic symbol for gold. Meanwhile, Danger Point, a nearby cliff, is crumbling, putting the town at risk. The girls discover that this crumbling cliff holds a secret to the past, and they are determined to uncover the mystery behind it with the help of a spirit named Remington, whose ship was marooned near Danger Point many years ago. Can the girls solve the mystery behind the strange occurrences near Danger Point? Or will they get in over their heads?

Surfside Girls is a light mystery set in a California town that focuses on friendship and magic -- a fun theme for sure. The diverse cast is refreshing, and the surfside vibe is cute, but the dialogue can feel a little stagey.

Though the plot feels formulaic and clunky at times, tweens will enjoy following the adventure that involve surfing, a friendly ghost, and a little magic. Adults, however, might not be charmed enough to stick with more than a few episodes.
