What's the Story?
SURVIVING BLACK HAWK DOWN is a three-part docuseries that examines the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu. In 1992 the United Nations launched UNOSOM (United Nations Operations in Somalia) to provide humanitarian aid to famine-stricken, civil war-torn Somalia, and to assist with a ceasefire that was negotiated between interim president Ali Mahdi Mohammed and warlord Mohamed Farah Aidid. Months later, United States-led multinational peace-keeping forces entered Somalia to support these efforts. Their intervention was at first well-received, but was largely ineffective as General Aidid, now leader of the rebel coalition known as the Somali National Alliance (SNA), escalated his attacks on coalition forces. By the end of July 1993, anti-U.S. sentiments in Somalia were increasing, as U.S. Rangers and Delta Force conducted raids in and around Mogadishu as part of Operation Gothic Serpent, the objective of which was to capture the General. On October 3, what was expected to be a routine raid to capture several of Aidid's aides in the center of Mogadishu resulted in a deadly 18-hour battle. The result was the downing of two Black Hawk helicopters, the death 18 U.S. soldiers, and a hostage situation that ended 11 days later. There were also hundreds of Somalian casualties. Now those who were there, including U.S. Ranger Randy Ragmalia, Delta Force operative Tom Satterly, Aidid militants like Yasmeen Dheere, and Somali civilians like Saido Mohamed describe what happened during the bloody battle from their points of view. These interviews, combined with dramatizations and archive video footage, offer viewers a comprehensive look at what transpired, and why it marked the beginning of the end of U.S. military involvement in the country.
Is It Any Good?
Produced by Ridley Scott, this docuseries offers disturbing insights into what happened before, during, and after the violent battle between the U.S. military and Somali insurgents made famous by Scott's 2002 movie Black Hawk Down. It addresses some of the mistakes the U.S. military made prior to October 3, 1993, and what went wrong once they entered Mogadishu. Former U.S. military members describe being surrounded by rebels and in the line of fire, desperately trying to help injured team members while trapped and awaiting rescue. Some also talk about watching the Black Hawk helicopters crash down into the streets in disbelief, and how they were unprepared to defend themselves against the insurgents because, as U.S. elite fighters, they were only trained to fight offensively. Adding to this is an interview with Chief Warrant Officer Michael Durant, who was taken hostage after surviving the crash of the helicopter he was piloting. These narratives also offer honest accounts of the brutality of some of their actions, including indiscriminately gunning down hundreds of people on the streets out of fear, anger, and retribution.
As the pace of the series moves faster it becomes quite dramatic, but unlike the Hollywood version of the story, Surviving Black Hawk Down also gives voice to the Somalians. Former Aidid militants talk about how they viewed peace keepers and U.S. forces as foreign aggressors, and how the United States underestimated how hard they would fight to protect their country. Meanwhile, innocent civilians share what it was like to be trapped in the middle of the fray, the fear they felt, and the losses they sustained, including the death of some of their children. It's not an easy watch, but the overall series underscores how complicated the political and military situation in Somalia was, and what was sacrificed by those who experienced it.
