What's the Story?
In SWEETPEA, Rhiannon Lewis (Ella Purnell, Fallout) walks through life feeling like she's a ghost of a person. Her boss tosses his coat on her when he comes through the door, her sister doesn't answer her texts, her job is going nowhere. When a loved one passes away, she finds that she's all alone in the world, continuously bullied by people she knew in high school. Her rage begins to build. What happens when her anger crosses the tipping point?
Is It Any Good?
Decent actors don't have much to work with in this brutal and disturbing horror-comedy. Sweetpea tracks the downfall of a young woman with low self-esteem whose descent into grief transforms her into a murderous fiend. Teens might be attracted to the slick staging and decent soundtrack, but beware.
This show's dark side begs some questions. Is there anything funny about a person stabbing people over and over? Is it cool to make lists about people you'd "love" to murder? Why is violence the only option for this forlorn girl? There are definitely more interesting thrillers—as well as skillfully crafted dark comedies—out there.
