What's the Story?
TAKE NOTE follows the journey of 14-year-old Calvin Richards (Braelyn Rankins) as he says goodbye to his normal life in Atlanta, and is thrust into a reality singing competition in Los Angeles for the summer. Greatly supported by his younger brother and parents, Calvin must navigate the unfamiliar world of Hollywood and the odd ups and downs of being a reality star. His desire to be just like his favorite pop icon, Ali Parkson (Mariah Campos), is put to the test when the stress of competition affects his mental health and family dynamics. Calvin must deal with making new friends, anxiety, rejection, and homesickness as the series progresses. Will he have what it takes for America to take note of his talent, or will he lose the competition?
Is It Any Good?
This is a family-friendly comedy, chock full of "dad jokes" and musical selections. Take Note does a wonderful job of spotlighting a positive representation of a Black family whose core values include support, faith, and love. The comedic aspects of the storyline sometimes feel forced or outlandish. While the show does a great job of highlighting themes such as the importance of children's mental health and expectations versus reality, more time could be spent unpacking these issues.
