Taylor Swift vs Scooter Braun: Bad Blood
What's the Story?
TAYLOR SWIFT VS. SCOOTER BRAUN: BAD BLOOD covers the high-profile and public battle between Swift and music manager Braun over the ownership of the masters of Swift's music catalog. It details the events leading to the $300 million fight, including her infamous past with Kanye West, and the long-term ramifications of the dispute through interviews with people on the outside.
Is It Any Good?
A compelling portrayal of Taylor Swift's struggle for autonomy over her work through a feminist frame in part one is marred by victim blaming and blatant misogyny in part two. The "two film" format of Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun: Bad Blood promises an interesting structure that offers a balanced view of the dispute, but fails to deliver. While the first film shines a light on the challenges women face in the music industry and the importance of artists' rights, the second film feels like a pointed character attack of Swift with red herrings that detract from the central issue of the master rights dispute. Its only redeeming quality is the light it shines on the responsibilities public figures have when it comes to social media.
