What's the Story?

THE AGE OF INFLUENCE is a documentary series that addresses the immense impact influencers can have on society by profiling some of social media's most notorious influencers. With the help of interviews, archive footage, and dramatic reenactments, it highlights how an influencer's need for attention, desire to be a celebrity, and greed can motivate extreme or criminal behavior. The real-life, off-line consequences of these activities are also discussed, including the effects they have on followers.

Is It Any Good?

Kids say ( 1 ):

This interesting, albeit superficial, docuseries addresses how social media influencers broadly impact the way they, and their followers, understand the world around them. It presents sensational influencer stories as a way of highlighting the many problems associated with this phenomenon. While some of these stories center around influencers whose desire for attention and status motivated extreme and criminal behavior, others underscore how being popular with followers can make it easier for an influencer to exploit and abuse people behind the scenes.

The The Age of Influence relies on very little scientific data to support the claims being made about the psychology of influencer behavior. Instead, it mainly relies on bloggers, pop culture-focused journalists, and crime victims to share their thoughts about it. As a result, the series is more entertaining than it is informative. Nonetheless, it successfully illustrates how impactful influencer culture has become in people's every day lives, and how this can have devastating consequences.
