What's the Story?

THE CHALLENGE: WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, yet another spinoff of MTV's The Challenge franchise, features previous challengers competing for cash and a world title. Set in Cape Town, South Africa, MVPs from series installments from the United States, Argentina, Australia, and the United Kingdom pair up with Challenge competition legends and complete grueling games that require mental and physical strength as well as a fair share of politicking. Those who end up last at the end of each challenge must face other competitors chosen by the group for possible elimination. Whoever makes it to the end without being eliminated wins the title and a $500K cash prize.

This show doesn't feel particularly updated or unique, despite hyping up the fact that the challengers are an elite international group. Like its global predecessors, The Challenge: World Championship combines intense physical and mental contests with some interpersonal drama to create an energetic reality competition. There aren't many surprises in how the game is played, or what it takes to win. Nonetheless, the spinoff features a fair share of big personalities, many of whom exude extreme confidence when in front of a camera, or when socially interacting with other players, which sometimes makes for some colorful moments.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the appeal of competition series featuring potentially dangerous or extreme challenges. Are contestants all elite or extreme athletes? If not, should they be competing? Do you think you could compete in any of these games?

  • The Challenge: World Championship celebrates the fact that it features top challengers from Argentina, Australia, the U.S., and the U.K.. Is there a difference in the way challengers from each country approach the competition? Do any of the teams have a particular advantage?
