What's the Story?

THE COMEBACK: 2004 BOSTON RED SOX chronicles what led up to the Red Sox baseball team's 2004 World Series win. In 1919, a year after beating the Chicago Cubs for the championship, the Red Sox "sold" Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. What followed is what baseball lore calls "the Curse of the Bambino," which kept the Red Sox from winning a World Series for 86 years. But by 2004, under new ownership, and under the general management of 28-year-old Theo Epstein, the Sox bring in a new mix of talented players, beat the Yankees for the American League pennant, and went on to beat the Cardinals in the World Series. Interviews with MLB and franchise administrators like Epstein, sports journalists like Howard Bryant, and former players like Pedro Martinez, along with archive footage, help tell the story of this epic return to glory.

This docuseries recounts the compelling tale of how the Red Sox franchise was able to transform itself after 86 years of failing to win a World Series Championship. In The Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox, the history of the team's "curse" is made interesting, as are the conversations about the changes that were made leading up to the 2004 championship. The club's recruiting tactics, some of which pushed the envelope of what was considered acceptable at the time, is also discussed. But what makes The Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox entertaining is how it tells the story of the team's road to victory in a way that feels contemporary and exciting. Red Sox fans will enjoy reliving the overall experience, and MLB enthusiasts who enjoy a good underdog story will also find something here.
