What's the Story?

THE DROP: A SNOWFALL SAGA follows Wanda (Gail Bean), who's recovering from drug addiction, as she works multiple jobs while trying to launch her career in the Los Angeles music industry. Driven by the desire for a better life and belief in the production skills of her cousin Lamar (Asante Blackk), Wanda immerses herself in the world of gangsta rap, which happens to live right at her South Central doorstep.

Melodrama gets a bad rap. The Drop: A Snowfall Saga features near-constant visual references to Boyz n the Hood, which is the first thing casual viewers might expect from a show that focuses on the gangsta rap era in Los Angeles. (Snowfall itself happens to have been created by John Singleton, who directed Boyz.) The series isn't hesitant to cram in as many touchstones as possible of the music and the hood movies era that grew out of it. Drive-bys, gang wars, and corrupt policemen abound.

Though the storytelling might be melodramatic, the characters are anything but. At the story's heart is Wanda, a woman with music industry ambitions who's recovering from drug dependency and constantly fighting to outgrow her violent past. The cast is rounded out with rappers, producers, and, yes, gang bangers. But the series concentrates less on the violence that got so many headlines back in the early '90s, and more on the actual artistry behind music and its relationship to the sociopolitical crucible of South Central Los Angeles, which gave birth to it.
