What's the Story?

THE FABLE is a wry comedy about an assassin trying out a new life. Stoic and serious, Akira (voiced by Kazuyuki Okitsu) is hard to faze, but his new assignment may be his hardest yet. Ordered to lay low and not kill for a year, Akira goes undercover in Osaka -- but life as a regular citizen is harder then it seems.

Humor is simple and positive messages are slow to take shape in this amusing action anime. The Fable relies on silly circumstances (an assassin ordered not to kill) and exciting action sequences featuring a skilled, clever fighter (think Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes) to draw viewers in. There's not a lot of meat on those bones, though -- at least in the start of the show. There's potential for something interesting to be said through the character's journey, but it's unclear whether the series will take a serious stance or stay a light-hearted comedy that just uses violence for laughs.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about violence in media. In what ways does this show glorify violence? In what ways does the show disapprove of violence? How does Akira's relationship with violence affect his personality and well-being?

  • Why do the people in Akira's life want him to learn how to live as a regular citizen? What can he gain from trying out these new experiences?
