What's the Story?

The Last Frontier begins with a plane crash. When a transport plane full of violent prisoners goes down in the Alaskan wilderness, U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke) and his small team find themselves on a manhunt aided by the FBI and CIA. As Frank tries to piece together what happened on the plane, he also must decide whether or not he can trust the others he's working with.

It's tough to come up with a premise as good as tracking 18 prisoners, escaped from a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness. The Last Frontier sets up a good half-dozen mysteries in its opening minutes. The problem is that it solves most of them by the end of the first episode, leaving behind only an outline of a TV show. The main characters slot into familiar tropes -- the family-man cop, the supervillain, the partner who's holding back information -- and the plot serves up cliche after cliche, beginning with a gratuitously telegraphed early death. The story seems to be merely a backdrop for the show's frequent action sequences, but a little investment in the writing could have turned it into a much better show.

  • Families can talk about mysteries. What is Frank Remnick's mission? What are the questions he needs to answer? How does this change over the course of the series?

  • Who is the big bad in this series? What makes him so dangerous? How is he a worthy rival of Frank and the team hunting him?

  • Do you like the action sequences in The Last Frontier? What makes them work or not work for you?
