What's the Story?

Executive-produced by Michelle Obama, THE LATER DATERS is a reality series featuring six "silver singles" (people over the age of 50) looking for love. Each featured participant—alone after divorcing, being widowed, or breaking off a long-term relationship—wants to meet someone with whom to share the next phase of their life. With the help of behaviorist, author, and dating coach Logan Ury, they work on their confidence and their dating behavior, and discuss the kind of person they're attracted to. After each blind date, Ury also talks to them about the pros and cons of seeing the date again. Family members, friends, and even ex-partners give their support during the process. At the end of the journey, they each hope to have met someone they can develop a long-term relationship with.

The upbeat, voyeuristic series showcases how a group of 50+ upper-middle-class singles are actively working to find someone to enjoy spending time with during the later years of their lives. The Later Daters highlights things that can make it hard for folks in this age group to make intimate social connections, like holding on too hard to memories of lives with previous partners, and having expectations that are connected to past long-term relationships. It also addresses how many people over the age of 50 struggle to be open and vulnerable with someone when they have spent decades being strong, self-reliant, and focused on taking care of others at home and at work. These are interesting insights, but like most unscripted dating shows, the entertainment comes from watching cast members go on blind dates and interact with the people they meet. Not surprisingly, there are painfully awkward moments when these encounters go sideways. But there are also sweet moments, especially when a "silver single" is obviously more comfortable with a new date. The Later Daters is worth checking out if you're looking for some pointers for jumping into the dating pool later in life.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the rituals associated with dating. Have dating-themed movies, TV shows, and competitions, along with dating apps, changed the way we think about dating over the years?

  • Is The Later Daters geared to all viewers? Does the fact that the "silver singles" featured appear to be from upper-middle-class backgrounds make it harder for some viewers to identify with them?
