What's the Story?

THE MANIPULATED tells a story of the ultra-rich using people in vulnerable positions for their entertainment. The series begins with a gentle, hard-working, plant-loving food deliveryman, Tae-Jung (Ji Chang-wook), who has a devoted girlfriend, supportive friends, and a brother dedicated to his studies, getting framed for rape and murder. He's sent to jail where he encounters a variety of individuals who seem set on harming him physically and mentally. He finds very few "safe" people in prison. The third act of the series is where the story comes together and the motivation for the framing of Tae-Jung becomes apparent while the story itself launches into a twisted and dark game that pits people of different classes against each other.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 3 ):
Kids say ( 1 ):

While the beginning and end of move along at an exciting clip, the middle of the series sags and has potential to lose viewers. The Manipulated's prison scenes start to make the viewer feel trapped in prison too, with their length and frustrating pace. Once the show gets to the reason behind the initial crime, it almost feels like a new show because the thread has been all but lost. Fans of psychological thrillers with dark and bloody storylines may find parts of the series enjoyable, but it's some work to stay with the plot.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about Tae-Jung's love for plants and gentle nature in the first part of episode 1. What do you admire about him and how he conducts himself while out in the community during that peaceful time?

  • Prison scenes are extremely violent and lengthy. Is that what your impression of prison in real life is? What do you and your family think prison should be used for: punishment? reform? a mix? How would you want to be treated after making a mistake—even if it was a big one?

  • What do you think about the way the super rich in The Manipulated use the less fortunate for their entertainment? Does this feel like fiction or do you think that people are capable of using each other for entertainment purposes without considering the consequences? Have you ever caught yourself laughing at someone's misfortune? How is that the same or different?
