The Narrow Road to the Deep North
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
THE NARROW ROAD TO THE DEEP NORTH recounts the experiences of Dorrigo Evans, an Australian medical officer in World War II. In the 1940s, Dorrigo (played by Jacob Elordi) and his unit are taken as prisoners of war and forced to work on the Burma Railway. In the 1980s, Dorrigo (now played by Ciarán Hinds) finds himself standing uncomfortably between veteran and celebrity status. Throughout the horrors from the past, Dorrigo also reflects on the affair he had with his uncle's young wife, Amy (Odessa Young).
Is It Any Good?
This series takes a powerfully emotional approach to a heavy, haunting time in history. The Narrow Road to the Deep North is compelling and sensitive, and it subverts the "war is hell" genre. The story navigates its flashbacks smoothly, and the romance is gradual and intense. Elordi's performance as Dorrigo is tender, complex, and passionate. The relationship dynamics—both romantic and platonic—are intriguing to watch. The violence, sex, and language make this suitable only for older teens.
