What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that The Quest is a reboot of a 2014 reality show of the same name, though in this show the contestants are kids. Immersed in a fictional land of fantasy, where witches and kings battle for kingdoms, there are violent and threatening scenes where characters (actors) are killed. Scary confrontations between malevolent adult characters and kids aren't on the scale of the Voldemort and Harry showdown in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but they can feel intense.

What's the Story?
In THE QUEST, teen contestants attempt to save a kingdom in a domain called "Everealm" while actors play their roles around them. The eight teen contestants, who come from a realm they call "America," follow a young woman who's riding a horse to a castle. There they are brought before a king and his successors -- a princess and two princes -- who have different opinions about how the next stages of warfare should roll out. The eight teens claim to be answering a call from "the fates" to help save the realm. Do they retreat in the face of dark magic? Or do they respond with magic of their own?
Is It Any Good?
The sleek production of the scripted scenes in The Quest offer a more immersive viewing experience than other reality shows. This is a treat for viewers who might want to follow the plot after seeing a battle end in a magical showdown at the start of the first episode. But the teens who enter the show after the deftly acted scenes can't really hold a candle to the scripted players who inhabit their roles so wholly. In that regard, the reality part of the show can be jarring and amateurish in comparison.
Fans of fantasy and role-playing games will enjoy following the teens through their challenges -- they're genuinely delighted to participate in a fantasy game that's so rich in detail. The show is strategic and intriguing enough for fantasy fans. Adults who have a warm set of 20-sided dice in their desk drawers will get a kick out of this show too. But if live-action role playing isn't your thing, you might find yourself spending the episodes trying to spy the dry ice beneath the bubbling cauldrons.
