What's the Story?
THE ROSHANS is a four-part docuseries about the late Indian esraj player and music director Roshan Lal Nagrath and how it influenced his sons' and grandson's success. Nagrath, aka "Roshan," combined folk music with Hindustani classical music to create the trademark music that made 1960s Bollywood musical films famous. Today his sons, director Rakesh Roshan and music composer Rajesh Roshan, follow his tradition of creative success in the Hindi film industry, while his paternal grandson Hrithik Roshan is one of the country's most famous and highest-paid actors. Interviews with the three men and other Roshan family members, friends, and colleagues help tell the tale of the family's legacy. Actor portrayals of key moments also highlight what it's like to be part of one of India's most famous Bollywood families. Archive footage and actor-performed reenactments also showcase the cross-generational contributions the Roshan family has made to Hindi cinema.
Is It Any Good?
The positive but superficial, sluggish docuseries offers viewers some first-hand accounts of the contributions four members of the Roshan family dynasty have made to India's movie industry. It offers a biographical narrative about the Roshans' early beginnings and later successes in Bollywood, which continued until his sudden death in 1967. Rajesh and Rakesh Roshan both share how their late father's work influences them today, and how it contributes to their success, including their work on the blockbuster movie Khao Nam Pyaar Hai, which launched Rakesh's son Hrithik's acting career and made him an overnight superstar. Some tabloid-worthy details, including Hrithik's sometimes-rocky relationship with his father and the 2000 attempted murder of Rakesh Roshan are also discussed. Though there's not a lot of depth to these conversations, folks interested in Hindi cinema will find what The Rohans has to offer interesting.

Families can talk about the history of Hindi cinema. What makes Hindi movies unique when compared to those produced in other countries?
The Roshans centers on male family members in the Indian entertainment industry. Are there women in the family who are also in the profession? Why aren't they featured?
