What's the Story?

THE SURVIVORS follows Kieran Elliott (Charlie Vickers), who returns to his hometown of Evelyn Bay, Tasmania for the first time since the death of two of his brother and a friend in a boating accident. The same day as the boating accident, a teenage girl and classmate of Kieran's went missing. When a newcomer to the town—one who's been investigating the girl's disappearance—is killed, Kieran and his girlfriend Mia (Yerin Ha) are pulled back into the mysteries of Evelyn Bay's past.

The pace might be slow, but the storytelling in this mystery is extremely efficient. The Survivors introduces two generations of Evelyn Bay residents, along with their complex relationships and haunting pasts, before setting up a compelling murder mystery that explores generational trauma and grief. The murder might be the hook that intrigues viewers, but The Survivors is mostly about the characters: how they love and hate one another in equal measure and how everything that happens in the town ripples through each of their lives.
