What's the Story?

In The Swarm, marine biologists from around the globe have begun to notice some odd changes in the behavior in the world's ocean life. Are these just natural outcomes of growing climate change, or is something more nefarious at play?

A welcome surprise with production values markedly higher than the CW's standard fare, including stunning nature cinematography from various corners of the world. The ocean shots in The Swarm are both breathtaking and spine-tingling, thanks to numerous scenes involving characters free-diving as unknown danger lurks nearby (would it kill them to grab an oxygen tank every once in a while?). And though the show follows the all-too-familiar plot of rebel experts challenging outdated policies and superiors, it also manages to introduce a unique global narrative on environmentalism. The diverse cast of characters are smart, hard-working and likable -- making their dawning horror about the way the world is changing all the more compelling. The Swarm is both a satisfying thriller and a less-than-subtle nudge to young viewers to consider the many effects of climate change.

  • How does the show use music, tempo and the unknown to build suspense? Do you find it effective?
