The West Coast Hustle
What's the Story?
THE WEST COAST HUSTLE is a reality series starring Chelsea Chanel Dudley, aka Chanel West Coast, as she balances her singing career with motherhood. After 30 seasons, the rapper left her role as a personality on Ridiculousness to enjoy life as a new mom to daughter Bowie Breeze. Joining her on this journey is her boyfriend and Bowie's dad, model/influencer/real estate agent Dom Fenison. Meanwhile, Chanel is working on recharging her music, plans to go on tour, and hopes to finally make her way to the top of the music scene. From feeding, playing with, and changing Bowie to collaborating and performing with musicians and DJs, viewers get to watch as Chanel embarks on new experiences and builds a life for her daughter.
Is It Any Good?
The mildly entertaining series features all the expected unscripted-TV qualities that most MTV reality shows are known for. The overall series is a promotional vehicle for Chanel West Coast's brand and her music, which is helped out by her Ridiculousness fame and her signature laugh. It offers lots of voyeuristic moments during the rapper's music recording sessions, bathing suit fashion shoots, and other ventures. But The West Coast Hustle also highlights some of West Coast's personal struggles with which other parents can identify, including the difficult negotiation between wanting to be a good role model for her daughter by working hard and accomplishing her goals, and feeling guilty about leaving her behind to do said work. Because of this, despite the predictable narrative, it succeeds at making Chanel West Coast appear very genuine as she begins a new stage of her life.
