Great renovation, positive role models!
What's the Story?
TRIXIE MOTEL is a reality series that documents the renovation of a Palm Springs motel by TV personality Trixie Mattel. The former RuPaul's Drag Race contestant and her partner David Silver bought a 70-year-old pink motel they first saw on the internet during the COVID pandemic for roughly $2 million. They've got $500K to give it a drag makeover and create a thriving business. But their budget is limited, the extreme renovations are full of unexpected challenges, and the themed custom designs for each room are pricey. But with the help of designer Dani Dazey, project manager David Rîos, and friends like Katya, Leslie Jordan, Zooey Deschanel, Jonathan Scott, Lisa Vanderpump, and Nicole Byers, they plan to stay on budget and finish in four months, just in time kick off Pride.
Is It Any Good?
The fun series offers all the features of a property renovation show, but does so with all the over-the-top elements associated with drag culture. Trixie Mattel, who also appears as Brian Michael Firkus throughout the series, treats this like the serious business venture that it is. She also approaches the project with a desire to honor the history of the local LGBTQ+ community in Palm Springs, and to support her partner, who steadfastly stood by her as she built her own career. But Trixie Motel situates all of this within drag culture, incorporating its vernacular, campy humor, and creative, larger-than-life designs that reflect who Trixie is. It's a well-balanced and entertaining combination that's also artistically inspiring.
