What's the Story?

TWISTED YOGA follows the rise and fall of a yoga center that functioned as a front for a cult. The story is centered on a victim returning to Paris in June 2024 for a judicial hearing, five years after escaping. Through first-hand accounts, the series explores how young people were drawn into a community that claimed to offer spiritual enlightenment through yoga and tantric sex, but eventually dominated every aspect of their lives.

While the series uses the standard elements of a cult documentary, its production feels heavy-handed and lacks finesse. Viewers are bombarded with religious imagery and a perpetually ominous score throughout Twisted Yoga, while even the archival photos are presented with overly dramatic captions. Though there are outlandish details to capture interest, such as the annual Miss Shakti beauty pageant held in honor of the group's guru, only viewers who are interested in the inner workings of cults will find much to drawn them in.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families watching Twisted Yoga can talk about how the show uses devices like haunting artwork, ominous music, and even dramatic photos captions. How does the way a documentary is edited or stylized change how you feel about the facts being presented? How do filmmakers use sound and visual cues to create a specific mood, and why is it important to separate those emotional triggers from the actual evidence as a viewer?

  • The survivors describe feeling disoriented and anxious when they were away from the group. How can a community use fear and isolation to make people feel like they can't survive on their own? Talk about how healthy relationships should make you feel more confident in the world, not more afraid of it.

  • The group used yoga and love as a way to attract new members before introducing more extreme rules. How do high-control groups hide their true nature behind a benign or helpful public image? How can a community can use fear and isolation to make people feel like they can't survive on their own?
