What's the Story?
UNITEUP! is the story of a group of teens who have the opportunity to become pop stars, also known as "idols." The story begins with Akira Kiyose (voiced by Kikunosuke Toya), a 16-year-old student who was offered a career as an idol at a talent agency called sMiLea. He accepts, feeling pressure from his single mother to begin taking care of the family. He is grouped up with two other teen boys, Chihiro Isuzugawa (voiced by Amon Hirai) and Banri Naoe (Ryotaro Yamaguchi), and they go through the journey together as brand new pop idols and new friends.
Is It Any Good?
UniteUp! delivers an enjoyable and lighthearted story about aspiring teen idols navigating their way through the pressures of the entertainment industry. The characters are relatable, with their dreams and struggles resonating with audiences, especially younger viewers. The anime does a good job of balancing the fun of musical performances with deeper themes, such as ambition and the challenges of balancing personal passion with family responsibilities. While the show doesn't break new ground in the idol genre, its positive messages about friendship and following your dreams make it a worthwhile watch. Fans of music-themed anime or those interested in the journey to stardom will likely find UniteUp! charming and uplifting.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the importance of putting work into your passion and how to follow your dreams. What do you feel passionate about, and what is a realistic way to work toward these goals?
Akira accepts his new career as a singer because he feels pressure from his mother, who is counting on him financially. Families can talk about financial responsibility and the pressure that could cause for children. How can we develop a home culture of honesty and openness when it comes to difficult topics like this?
