Untamed
What's the Story?
In Yosemite's UNTAMED wilderness, National Park Service agent Kyle Turner (Eric Bana) has a mystery on his hands when a woman tumbles off the edge of the El Capitan rock formation, and it's discovered she was already dead. Now with the help of park ranger Naya Vasquez (Lily Santiago) and his boss and longtime friend Paul Souter (Sam Neill), Turner is starting to find that the murder is connected to some very bad things going on within the park service itself.
Is It Any Good?
Everybody has a secret that plays out under big skies and towering trees in this gussied-up police procedural-cum-murder mystery. But Untamed's real MVP is the rock-solid main cast: As a divorced couple, Eric Bana and Rosemarie DeWitt make their sad history feel real; viewers can literally feel their pain. Sam Neill is equally terrific and gravitas-rich as Kyle's boss and old friend, who sees the direction Kyle is heading but is powerless to stop it. These three ground a plotline that's slightly overstuffed: There's a body that opens up questions about bad stuff going down in Yosemite; a missing-person case five years cold; Kyle's long-simmering redemption; drama in Jill's new family; a vengeful stalker; and there's something going on with Yosemite's Indigenous population too.
With so many narrative threads boiling away, something's bound to be overcooked. But Bana is so good as a sad guy who sees his chance to set something, anything, to rights that Untamed ticks along nicely. The green scenery definitely helps too (though the series was filmed almost entirely in British Columbia instead of Yosemite).

Families can talk about why TV dramas so often center around crime. What is interesting about crime and criminals?

Untamed was largely not filmed in Yosemite. Can you tell? If so, how? Does it matter?
-
Murder mysteries are usually solved at the end of a series or movie. Does Untamed follow that convention? Why is it more satisfying to get answers at the end of a story instead of in the middle?
