What's the Story?

ZILLOW GONE WILD is a series based on the popular Instagram account of the same name, showcasing oddball home listings on the real estate website. Host Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) tours three homes per episode, meeting with the owners to get the skinny on what inspired them to customize their spaces in such unique ways. In some cases, the homes are on the market; in others, the owners have just moved in. Each home is rated in three categories: creativity, commitment, and wackadoodle. At the end of the episode, a winner is chosen to advance to the next round. As the series progresses, a bracket emerges, and the penultimate episode gives viewers a chance to cast their vote on which house has earned "wildest" status.

The Instagram account that inspired this series became popular in large part for its snarky wit, which unfortunately has not translated over to the series. Host Jack McBrayer is preternaturally chipper, and a little of his "Aw, shucks!" routine goes a long way—though he does seem genuinely interested in these offbeat lairs. Keeping the focus on the homeowners would go a long way toward making Zillow Gone Wild more interesting, as opposed to the time-wasting game show conceit that adds nothing of value to the series. Should there be a second season, here's hoping the showrunners delve more into the psychology of why someone would want to live in a missile silo or replica of Snow White's cottage, as well as the hoops the owners must have jumped through to bring these bizarre dream homes to life.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about whether they could imagine living on one of these offbeat properties. Which one would you choose and why?

  • Customizing a house to the extent seen on Zillow Gone Wild takes a lot of skill, creativity, and most of all, money. Can you think of any affordable ways to put a unique stamp on your home that may be more accessible to the general public?
