A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

Once you view the excellent tutorial by tapping "help" on the main page, the controls are very clear. It is also easy to play without the tutorial by just experimenting with the controls. There are no levels to this game.

Violence & Scariness

Once you get letters moving around the screen, you can remove them by either shooting an arrow at a letter you want to remove (the letter disappears when the arrow hits it), or setting a bomb that removes all letters within a certain area.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz is an app meant to entertain, creating sound effects and screen designs with the letters of the alphabet. Players can drag letters onto the screen from one of four categories: gravity, crickets, vehicles, or birds. Each letter on the screen makes a sound like its letter sound, bouncing with gravity, clumping together with crickets, disappearing when they run into each other with vehicles, or flocking together with birds. To
clear letters off the screen (in addition to vehicles running into each
other), players can tap the recycle button, shoot
arrows at specific letters to remove them, or set off bombs that clear
letters within a certain area. This game makes plenty of noise as the letters bounce or travel around the screen.

Is it any good?

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ allows unusual ways to make art and noise. With four different categories of letters to add, players can try each one individually, or mix them together for new reactions. The crickets, vehicles, and birds categories have letters that interact with one another. With the gravity category, each letter acts independently, responding to gravity. You can tilt the device to help letters move as well as bounce. There is enough complexity in this game to keep kids interested for a while, or to cause an adult to fiddle for a time. The tutorial is very clear in explaining how the app works, but leaves a few of the surprises for the player to figure out.
