A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

This game features a sophisticated, strategic turn-based battle system that will appear very daunting to anyone who doesn't have experience with this genre. Even those who have played RPGs before will have to tailor their skills to the unique system here. The end result is a game that is rewarding and challenging, though it certainly requires a lot of cognitive thinking and meticulous strategy.

The story in this game hinges on violence. Players are faced with a seemingly never-ending enemy force and must use force to keep the kingdom safe. The combat itself is presented from a top-down perspective and uses a turn-based, strategy-based combat system that feels more like a board game than a gritty war zone. There are, however, some areas with off-red splotches that could be interpreted as blood.

Some of the female characters wear outfits that reveal cleavage and/or midriffs.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Some of the dialogue includes occasional references to alcohol or going to a nearby pub.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Avadon: The Black Fortress HD is a role-playing game (RPG) set in a fantastical universe. Although the characters are human, the environments and setting are far from anything in today's real world. The story is about an invading enemy force, and it is up to the players to protect their kingdom. While violence is paramount to the progression of this storyline, the depiction is minimal and violence is only used as a defensive measure. There are also fleeting references to drinking alcohol, and some of the female characters have outfits that reveal cleavage or midriff. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

Is it any good?

AVADON: THE BLACK FORTRESS HD is one of the most feature-rich, expansive RPG titles available for the iPad. With well over 40 hours of gameplay packed into this downloadable title, it's easy for players to get sucked in and become lost in the tale of battle and triumph. The battle system is intricate and can be confusing, but taking the time to master the strategy involved and honing the skills required results in a very worthwhile payoff. It is definitely worth the purchase for any fantasy or role-playing fan.
