A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

Backgammon HD allows for a few variations on Backgammon rules, which can be customized each time you play the game. There are plenty of screens explaining how to play with the different rule sets. On a small screen sometimes it's easy to tap the wrong space and move when you don't mean to. Fortunately there is an "Undo" button, but sometimes it undoes more than you intended.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Backgammon HD is a faithful implementation of Backgammon as an app. The game comes with plenty of instructions to learn to play, and has several options for playing single player against a computer or two-player either on the same device, peer-to-peer on separate devices, or online. Parents should note that online play requires signing up for the Plus+ network and adding "friends" on the network.

Is it any good?

BACKGAMMON HD is an impressive implementation of the classic board game. With a variety of options to customize the game, depending on your preferences, it's a great app for backgammon fans. There are also included instructions for the different variants. The app has great graphics, even on the small screen, but would be easier to see on an iPad.

For novice backgammon players, the wealth of options may be intimidating at first, but it is fairly easy to start up a new game, and the option to play a two-player game on a single device is a good one. However, in order to play online you must sign in to the Plus+ network and add friends; it would be nice to have a Quick Play option to quickly find an online opponent.
