A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

The birds are arranged alphabetically in a list with a color photo thumbnail for each. It's easy to search for a bird if you already know what you're looking for, but the app is missing the means to identify birds visually, making it a straight encyclopedia rather than a field guide.

Violence
Sex

There is a section on bird reproduction, but it's limited to information like what the eggs look like, how many broods per year, and what time of year is mating season.

What's it about?

The app catalogs more than 304 species of birds. Each entry has basic facts about things like habitat, diet, and reproduction; to learn more, users must follow a link to Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia. You can also access the birds' songs and take a quiz that requires you to identify the type of bird based on a picture or song.

Is it any good?

The highlight of BIRDS PRO HD - NATURE MOBILE is its library of beautiful high-definition photographs, many of which have been submitted by users. There are basic facts about each bird too, but users must follow a link to Wikipedia to learn more, which requires an Internet connection. Users can browse the list of birds alphabetically, or search for a specific bird by name. Birds Pro HD is a decent encyclopedia for the casual bird enthusiast. For a more comprehensive bird app, try the Audubon Society's Field Guide apps, which also include birdwatching tips and the ability to identify unknown birds by appearance.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the birds they see: What are their characteristics? How might those features serve them in their habitat?

  • Go bird watching in your neighborhood and see if you can use the app to identify birds and their songs.
