What’s It About?
Tap the screen anywhere to open CHANTLINGS. Sing a note and listen as the green blob mirrors your voice. Tap any of the other three blobs to "wake" them up -- then sing and listen to their harmonious response. If kids use headphones, they can tap on the little icon on the top left of the screen to sing together with the blobs. Tap on any of the blobs at any time to turn them on or off. Tap the camera icon to start screen recordings to listen to later.
Is It Any Good?
This simple little musical app can be fun for kids who like to sing, though it might not have much staying power. It's really neat to listen to the blobs respond to your own voice, and even mimic your words. Singers will certainly appreciate the automatic harmonies. Kids can experiment with turning each blob on and off to hear what their unique voice adds. Kids have to sing pretty slowly to make it all work well. Some kids may actually find it calming or meditative to chant slowly and listen to the harmonious responses. Unfortunately, when kids sing together with the blobs, it's hard to hear anything other than their own voice -- even more so because they need to wear headphones to activate the sing-together function. Particularly because of that, it's nice to be able to record the singing session so that kids can listen back later and hear how it all fits together. Although there's not much going on, it may take kids a bit of experimentation to learn how to play around with the different options. Overall, although it's fun for a bit, Chantlings doesn't do that much, so kids may not find reasons to keep coming back to it.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the sounds kids can create with their own voice and some help from Chantlings. What happens when kids turn different blobs on or off? How does the sound change?
Sing together with your kids and listen to what beautiful music you all -- and the singing blobs -- can create.
If kids find the app meditative, talk about how the chanting makes them feel and encourage them to use chanting as a great tool for emotional regulation.
