What’s It About?
DRAGON SHAPES: GEOMETRY CHALLENGE begins with a brief story about rescuing a village's dragon. Kids are given tangram-style puzzles to complete, which can be done by dragging shapes and rotating them to fit the puzzle. There are four main levels and a total of 50 puzzles. Kids have to finish a puzzle before moving on to the next one, and they're provided with essential vocabulary and other information before starting. Kids are not penalized for repeated attempts, and they can access hints along the way. A "grown-ups" section has information about the game's educational goals, settings, and a privacy policy.
Is It Any Good?
With its gorgeous graphics and tangram-style puzzles, Dragon Shapes: Geometry Challenge is a fantastic tool for teaching early geometry skills. Not only do kids learn the names and attributes of many shapes, but they also develop spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills. The shape-rotating feature is large enough for small fingers to easily use, and the differently colored shapes that make up each puzzle help kids visualize composite figures. Kids can learn important math skills and have plenty of fun as they work to rescue the village dragon.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about shapes. As kids work on the puzzles, talk about which small shapes make up the larger composite shapes.
Have kids design their own tangram puzzles using paper, pencil, a ruler, and scissors. Kids can draw the puzzle, cut out the shapes, and put the puzzle back together.
