"It's not a bug, it's a feature." is an excuse used to cover when a glitch or other problem. Unfortunately, it feels like it should be the tagline for Dungeon VS Gunner. On the surface, it looks like it has the potential to be a decent mobile shooter. But there are so many issues with the game, the only thing it successfully shoots is itself in the foot. Right from the start, the game is filled with so many microtransactions and ads that it feels like the game only exists to give you something to do in-between. While it might be understandable and even acceptable to watch a 30-second ad as a way to continue a game, the idea of watching one simply to get to the Game Over screen seems ridiculous. Even without the advertisements, the game nickels and dimes players with a slew of microtransactions that feel overly forced onto the player.

Setting aside the issues with ads and microtransactions, basic gameplay is another substantial hurdle with Dungeon VS Gunner. It's almost as if instead of trying to address any problems to make the game more playable, it left them in as "challenges" for the player to overcome. A prime example of this is the auto-aim feature, which immediately targets the closest enemy. The problem with this is that players are often being attacks from a distance and from all directions. Nothing is more infuriating than trying to take out a turret that's streaming flaming death at you, only to have your gun suddenly point away because of a stray minion. Worse still, even when the auto-aim is zeroed in on the right target, your bullets seems to miss nearly as often as they hit. There are plenty of other issues the keep Dungeon VS Gunner from being much fun, and the only thing your trigger finger will itch to do is to hit the uninstall prompt.

  • Families can talk about violence in video games. Is the impact of the violence in Dungeon vs Gunner affected by the cartoonish look of the gameplay? How can things like art style, setting, etc., affect the way violence is portrayed in video games? What makes more cartoonish or slapstick depictions of violence have less of an impact on younger audiences?

  • How intrusive can advertisements be in free-to-play games? Is it fair to have certain key features in a game locked behind watching an ad? How much is a fair price to remove ads from a game?
