Educational Value

Kids can work on self-expression, storytelling, and speaking.

Ease of Play

A tutorial helps kids get started, but it had some glitches, including one that caused us to lose our work. It may not be clear to kids how to exit the menu if they choose to add more characters or change the scene once in editing mode.

Sexy Stuff
Language
Consumerism

In-app purchases available, including additional content packs. Parent gate is overly simple (single-digit addition).

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Fox & Sheep Movie Studio - Create Your Own Story is a simple movie creator with characters from other popular Fox & Sheep apps, including Little Fire Station - Fire Engine & Firefighters. It's geared toward preschoolers but does have in-app purchases, including some for content packs. The parent gate is simple single-digit addition, so the app-based barrier for purchases is low. There was at least one glitch in the tutorial: At one point there were instructions to leave a menu by pressing the home button, which resulted in all of the work being erased. While younger kids will likely be happy with the the app as is, older kids might be frustrated by the lack of advanced features, such as scene changes, combining shorter videos, and the ability to edit saved movies. Read the app's privacy policy to find out about the types of information collected and shared.

What's it about?

FOX & SHEEP MOVIE STUDIO - CREATE YOUR OWN STORY leads kids through story creation by asking them to choose characters, scenes, and music. These elements are added to a set, where kids can move characters around to set the stage. When they press the record button, the app will play music and kids can have the characters "act" out a scene. Using the device microphone, they'll add dialogue and sound effects. There are also special effects: one, a paintbrush, allows kids to add a title or custom drawings. The app includes a base set of characters, scenes, and effects. Additional objects can be purchased for $0.99 for each "pack," or $1.99 for a set of three. Kids can save their work to a special in-app gallery or share out via the device's share options.

Is it any good?

Young aspiring filmmakers will enjoy getting their feet wet as they record "movies" without much help from parents. Fox & Sheep Movie Studio - Create Your Own Story doesn't have a lot of features, but that makes it ideal for younger kids who like to tell stories but aren't ready to worry about editing and scene changes. Kids who are familiar with other Fox & Sheep titles will enjoy being able to incorporate them into their movies. Though it's a great creative choice for little ones, older kids will soon be looking for more features for their films.
